SeedMaster
SeedMaster — advanced crystallization control for sugar factories
SeedMaster is Zutora’s supersaturation-based crystallization control system for sugar vacuum pans and cooling crystallizers. It helps factories keep crystallization in the optimal zone, improving batch repeatability, crystal quality, pan floor stability and energy use.
Proven in more than 120 sugar industry installations across five continents.
What is SeedMaster?
SeedMaster is an advanced control system for sugar crystallization. It combines inline process measurements, lab data, sugar technology calculations and control algorithms to guide or automate the crystallization process based on supersaturation.
Instead of relying only on fixed recipes, operator experience or indirect process values, SeedMaster helps maintain the massecuite in the desired crystallization zone throughout the batch or process step.
SeedMaster turns crystallization from operator-dependent boiling into controlled, repeatable supersaturation management.
Why crystallization control is difficult
Sugar crystallization is one of the most sensitive and economically important steps in the factory. Small deviations in supersaturation, feed rate, vacuum, steam pressure, temperature or seeding can affect crystal size, fines formation, batch time and sugar exhaustion.
Supersaturation changes continuously
Feed quality, concentration, temperature, purity and pan operation all influence supersaturation during the batch.
False grain formation
If supersaturation becomes too high, unwanted nucleation can create fines and reduce crystal quality.
Long or unstable batch times
Poor control can lead to slow growth, repeated corrections, water addition and inconsistent pan performance.
Crystal size variation
Unstable crystallization conditions can produce wider crystal size distribution and inconsistent product quality.
Operator dependency
Experienced operators are valuable, but manual control can vary between shifts and factories.
Energy and capacity impact
Unstable pan operation affects steam use, batch time, pan availability and overall factory throughput.
How SeedMaster controls crystallization
SeedMaster continuously evaluates the crystallization state using inline measurements and sugar-specific calculations. Based on the measured and calculated parameters and the process phase, it provides control actions or operator guidance to keep the process within the desired operating zone.
Depending on the installation, SeedMaster can control or support control of feed, steam, vacuum, seeding and other relevant process variables.

Control based on supersaturation — not guesswork
In sugar crystallization, supersaturation is the key driving force for crystal growth. If it is too low, crystal growth is slow and batch time increases. If it is too high, false grain formation and poor crystal size distribution can occur.
SeedMaster is designed to keep supersaturation in the desired region during critical phases of crystallization, helping the process remain stable and repeatable.
